As a little girl I was crazy about nature. I knew all Finnish bird species by name in Finnish, most in Swedish, and a whole lot in Latin. I knew the animals, from moose to beetles. Plants, everything. I would watch a documentary about a special animal species, and pretend and play I was that species for days. Once I had a particularly great fascination about cheetahs, and so I presented myself to my mother's acquaintance with cheetah as my middle name. They both still tease me about it.

I played with ants, painting them blue to see how long it took for them to come up again from their nest. I collected feathers, chasing pheasants around, trying to get a beautiful tail feather. I took frog eggs inside, caring for the tadpoles. I had a worm farm, and I even opened a dead frog's stomach to see what it had had for dinner. Wasps, among others. Maybe that was why it was dead.

I loved chicks, and walked around every spring, hoping I'd find an orphan that I could take home. I loved to feed ducks and seagulls. So my choice of profession was obvious, even if I didn't begin my study with the thought of choosing the laboratory field. Animals, life, was all it was going to be about.
